Celebrating Life with Raag Yaman
By Ajayji and Ashwini Ma
When a bundle of emotions are put to tune , a fine piece of music is born…..Yesterdays Recharger …a musical evening , carried us on its wings to a range of songs in Raag Yaman that can be ideally described as …’Bhule bisre geet’
Raag Yaman is a melodic mode in Indian classical music and one of the most popular and widely used raags by Indian Music Directors. It is a beginners raag.
Raag Yaman is an evening Raag…It makes use of tivra madhyams which lends it a characteristic peace and tranquillity….Raag Yaman Kalyan is different as it makes use of both Tivra madhyams as well as shuddha madhyams……
Many of us sing songs composed in this Raag but we are hardly aware of this fact….
Songs such as……
Tumko dekha toh…Chandan sa badan…hothon as choo lo tum…ehsaan tera hoga mujhpar…..inhi logon ne le liya dupatta mera….jab deep jale aana….na jao saiyaan….is mod se jaate hain….zindagi ke safar mein guzar jaate hain jo makaam…..
Zindagi bhar nahin bhulegi woh barsaat ki raat…Mausam hain aashikaana….chhu kar mere mann ko….paan khaaye saiyaan humaro..jiya le gayo ri mera saawariyan……and many many more..these songs are put to tune with ingenious combination of the swaras that marks the creativity of each music composer……. all these songs were sung by us to the accompaniment of casio played flawlessly by Ajayji and in the very melodous voice of Ajayji and Ashwini Ma with all of us joining in….
The beauty of the Yaman Raag is that it has a tinge of tranquility even when disturbing emotions are expressed by the song …..yet it can be used without compromising on the essence of the emotion or the lyrical excellence of the song….it is used in the most romantic songs evoking emotions that range from love..yearning ….peace to happiness ……having a soothing effect on the mind…..the tickling Kawaallis and lavani too gain in beauty when composed in this raag…..
Yesterday young and old alike let their guards down as they sang these melodious numbers……
A lavani in Marathi was also sung by Madhuraji and Arunaji…..
Reminding us that August is the month of Indian Independence…little Swara and Anjali sang a patriotic song……
Yesterdays Recharger was a tribute to great singers like Mohammed Rafi whose Death anniversary falls on 31st July and Kishore Kumar whose Birth anniversary is being celebrated today…..
We also celebrated the birthdays of those whose birthdays fall in August….Duttaprasad who was awarded for his excellent performance sang the song …Chhoo kar mere mann ko….which
co incidentally happened to be in Raag Yaman….
All I would want to say is ……
Music is the language of the heart….and yesterday all of us lost our hearts to raag Yaman. …..
